Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the most well-known modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The therapy involves the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. According to TCM theory, there is an intricate network of meridians that pass energy (“chi”) throughout the body. By inserting needles at points along these meridians, the Acupuncturist can adjust the energy flow and thus alter one’s physiology. Modern research suggests that acupuncture’s effects can be explained by nervous and hormone system responses. Acupuncture and TCM can be very helpful in the treatment of pain, injuries, women’s health, digestive issues, and other diseases.
What is involved in an acupuncture treatment?
An acupuncture treatment may include tui-na (Chinese medical bodywork), herbal consultation, dietary recommendations, infrared heat, moxibustion (the herb mugwort is burned to warm acupuncture points), or cupping (suction cups used to relieve tight muscles). Acupuncture is very safe and most people find it relaxing. Our acupuncturist is New York State licensed, board certified in Chinese herbology, and is an associate professor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine where he completed his Master’s degree.
