Teacher Training

The story that inspires the naming of our training program is that which describes Hanuman’s dedication to learning and his humble nature. Gifted at birth with unlimited strength, but also cursed with forgetfulness, Hanuman was rarely aware of his incredible potential. Only by surrounding himself with loving friends, and devoting himself to a cause, was Hanuman able to discover that he could lift mountains!

This story of Hanuman is one we can all relate to.

The ‘Hanuman’s Tale’ yoga teacher training program is an opportunity to surround yourself with supportive, like-minded people and to realize your strengths and qualities. To uncover your potential for incorporating yoga into your lifestyle and sharing your experience with the world.

Led by Victoria Greene, and with guest lecturers visiting us along the way, Hanuman’s Tale will prepare you to teach yoga with clarity, compassion, and confidence.

This 4-month training; provides a foundation in the principles of physical postures, breathing practices, meditation, teaching techniques, and anatomy and emphasizes the philosophical underpinnings of yoga. We will meet in person for a total of 10 weekend sessions beginning in January and ending in May.

We have teaching sessions every other Tuesday throughout the training.

If you are a future yoga teacher or are curious about yoga and want to thoroughly deepen your understanding of it, we are proud to offer you a carefully composed schedule of training.

Join us for the 2024 Yoga Teacher Training at The Yoga Room, Astoria.

OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM ELEMENTS

Practicum:
We are dedicated to your evolution as a teacher – even if you feel that you do not want to teach publicly, there will be a focus on teaching each other. Being able to communicate what you are learning is a great way to let those thoughts and ideas take root.

Teaching Methodology:
Demonstrating, assisting, correcting, voice skills, language, qualities, styles of teaching, and working with different types of learners.

Philosophy, Lifestyle, and Ethics:
Study of yoga history and historically relevant texts. This re-imagined program for 2024 will build directly from the 8-limbs of classical yoga with a whole weekend being themed around the study of each limb. Good & right living, asana, breathwork, energy work, concentration, meditation, and samadhi (deep conscious connection). You will be required to read a lot of material and be ready to discuss what you are understanding. We will often work directly with The Yoga Sutra, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Light On Yoga, The Heart Of Yoga, and The Bhagavad Gita during our sessions together.

This program is 75% lecture-based with guided and interactive conversations and debates. Only approximately 25% of the program itself is dedicated to Asana/ Poses. The majority of your posture work will be done in classes during the week. You are required to take a minimum of 2 classes a week as well as the training sessions.

ABOUT
The Yoga Room mentorship program provides a unique experience in continuing education. Over the course of three months, you will be guided through an in-depth study of asana practice, teaching skills and yogic study.  Following your own path of research, you will be paired with an experienced teacher who will challenge and support you to find your own voice as a teacher. The program has flexible hours and is made up of the following components:

Private Mentorship Sessions
You will meet with your mentor once per week for a discussion session. These sessions will be structured to outline your goals and objectives and discuss your progress. You will also be given reading and writing assignments relevant to your interests. (Total 12 Hours)

Asana Practice
You are required to practice two Asana classes per week, either both with your mentor or one with your mentor and a second with a teacher that your mentor will recommend. A membership to The Yoga Room for the duration of your training is included in the cost of the program. (Minimum 36 Hours)

Observation / Assist
Initially, you will observe your mentor’s class and have a brief discussion afterwards to answer any questions that may have arisen regarding sequencing, assists, etc.  If your mentor deems it appropriate, you may begin to offer assists within the class and, guided by your mentor, lead one or two poses in class. (Total 9 Hours)

Practice Teaching
Towards the end of the program, you will have an opportunity to teach two full-length classes. Your mentor will observe and provide feedback. (3 Hours).
